Systemerror with the tutorial

Postby CarUser » Mon May 03, 2010 13:47

I installed orange-svn via the deb archive and I try to follow the tutorial.

But I get a SystemError with the car example.
I downloaded car.name and car.data and made the following "program":

Code: Select all
#!/usr/bin/env python

import orange

car_data = orange.ExampleTable('car')

Leads to the following error:

SystemError: makeVariable: unknown type for attribute 'P_'

The _ changes to other characters if I run the program again.
Am I using orange in a wrong way?

I also get the error when I compile orange from source.

Just to add some python versions:
I tried 2.5 and 2.6.

I think you need to import orngIO to use the C50 file formats.

Code: Select all
#!/usr/bin/env python

import orange

import orngIO

car_data = orange.ExampleTable('car')

SystemError: makeVariable: unknown type for attribute ',

Thanks, but that wasn't the solution for me :-(.

Hi, we'd need to see what's in car.name. Where did you download it from? Is it by any chance in utf-8 (with BOM?) or some other (weirder) encoding?

It's car.names actually :-).

~/progs/orange % file car.data
car.data: ASCII text, with CRLF line terminators

I didn't know we've had this file on our site. :)

I could replicate the bug. Then I fixed the bug described in http://www.ailab.si/orange/forum/viewto ... =2459#2459, and now I can't replicate this one any longer.

Since the same broken function was called in your example, I believe it was the same bug. Could you update from SVN and try again?

Seems it was the same bug. It is fixed for me now. Thank you a lot.
