There is no basic tutorial for the widgets. It is best to start with the documentation for individual widgets (http://orange.biolab.si/doc/widgets/) starting with the File widget.

Most pages contain example workflows, try following those examples.

The widgets are run from the Orange Canvas interface.

Did you install orange from source? There should be an orange-canvas script on your PATH (or in '$HOME/.local/bin if you installed in user site-packages). You will also need PyQt4 and PyQwt libraries.

Technically you can use them in a separate program as long as it is PyQt4 application. Most of the widgets' source code contains a small 'if __name__ == "__main__"' test that launches the widget with no Canvas. For instance http://orange.biolab.si/trac/browser/orange/Orange/OrangeWidgets/Visualize/OWScatterPlot.py#L441. That being said there is no documentation and no fixed interface (it might change at any moment).
