Unsupervised learning

Postby Guest » Sat Feb 18, 2006 14:34

Hey,

Does Orange support unsupervised learning such as Self-Organizing-Maps? I mean I don't have classes but want to classify my data into n number of classes. Is it possible in Orange?

There is a SOM widget in orange, under Associate.

I've used SOMToolbox for MATLAB, which you could also have a look at.
http://www.cis.hut.fi/projects/somtoolbox/
It is known to work with MATLAB version 5 and partially with version 6.

Orange has, especially since recent additions, a number of tools for unsupervised learning. In scripting:

- clustering (http://www.ailab.si/orange/doc/reference/clustering.htm)
- MDS (see orngMDS.hmt in documentation folder)
- SOM (see orngSOM.htm in documentation folder)

For all of these there are widgets that include various visualizations of the models. These includes widgets for kNN clustering, hierarchical clustering and visualization of dendrograms, SOM and their visualizations, and MDS. Most of these widgets are in Association pane in Orange Canvas.

Most of these additions are rather new, to the point that we did not annonce them yet, but they are all available in latest snapshots and on CVS.
