What is the distance function used in SOM?

Postby Guest » Mon Jan 08, 2007 7:20

Dear All,

I am new to Python and orange, and I am curious about the SOM implementation in orange, but I don't know where to dig out the source for that function.

Could someone please explain the following questions to me?

1. How does SOM/Orange deal with Hybrid attributes? In this situation, how does those distance were calculated?

2. If I use SOM, do I have to normalize those continuous attributes myself before calling SOM?

Many thanks,
B.G.

Sorry for late reply: SOM is not implemented in Orange, we simply took SOM_PAK package i just implemented the data interface. The details on SOM PAK are at http://www.cis.hut.fi/research/som-rese ... rams.shtml. (it would be nice to be able to choose from a set of distance functions, but that would essentially mean reimplementing SOM. we instead wanted to integrate SOM PAK within Orange, as it comes from the group that invented this technique).
