Git-mirror of source code

Postby gregglind » Fri Feb 18, 2011 21:07

This has been mentioned before, but it would be nice to have a git mirror of the source tree, that tracks the subversion. $ git-svn clone from your svn repo is quite a heavy operation, and wastes your bandwidth.

If you want help with this, please ask!

Thanks!

We are already evaluating this idea. The problem is that it is not so easy to just switch to a new source code repository, you have also to educate all users, adapt development practices and so on (and mirroring can be quite error prone).

Thanks for suggestion.

I am not suggesting that git become authoritative, but that there is a git mirror. Then as users pick it up (or don't) they can start changing dev practices, and you get a period of experimentation. I know that for me, working from the subversion repo is quite unpleasant, but I might be a minority. It is a deep repo, so initial git-svn checkout take *a long time* (i.e., hours).

I am quite interested in contributing code and ideas (and have!), and a git mirror would make it easier. Thanks for listening to the input.

I second this. A git repository on github would make contributions vastly more practical.
