GSOC 2012: Test scripts, documentation and NNs

Postby makokal » Mon Mar 19, 2012 2:28

Hi All,

I am Computer Science graduate student at Jacobs University in Germany. I am interested in two of the project ideas listed so far.

Development of test and example scripts and a comprehensive documentation. I have vast experience with writing technical documentation and working with ReST.

Addition of Neural Network learning. Again I have experience with NNs including more advanced versions as Echo State Networks. I am also aware of a number of nice C++ implementations of NNs which we could explore to achieve this. Examples include Libann[1], FANN[2], Flood[3]

I have only recently starting being familiar with orange but I have experience with similar python toolkits like scikits.learn and generally Matlab based implementations. I would like to hear some more about these topics especially the NNs.

I hope to spend a wonderful summer learning and contributing :)

TEST SCRIPTS, EXAMPLE SCRIPTS and DOCUMENTATION

Although the scripting documentation is good already, I have a few ideas on how it can be made more 'up-to-date'.

A few questions-

1. Which manual will most of the re-drafting work focus on? The Tutorial, Reference or Widget Development Manual?

2. The most exciting part is the design of new use cases. Is there a degree of freedom in choosing the concepts to highlight and demonstrate? Are there any constraints?

3. A link from where I can understand the class hierarchy and functions of Orange 2.5 would be useful at this point.

Echo state networks sound great, but since there is currently no support for NNs in Orange, we will probably be looking for the basic feedforward NN. I personally would love to explore different architectures of NNs, but only after the support for feedforward NN will be properly implemented and thoroughly tested. I would like to hear about your ideas in your proposal. Go wild.
