Dummies guide to MDS

Postby sysmod » Mon Jun 25, 2012 12:16

OK, I've just installed Orange in Win 7. I don't know python and have basic stats.
I have some data from a card sort both as raw data
participant, card label, category label
and as a similarity matrix, card label x card label, with count of association in same category label.

What are the steps to get this data into Orange and produce a MDS plot?

TIA

<bump>
Anyone?
Do I have to write a script or can it be done from the GUI?
Is there an example starting from a dissimilarity matrix and outputting the XY coords of the map?

If you have a precomputed dissimilarity matrix you can load it with the Distance File widget (http://orange.biolab.si/doc/widgets/_static/Unsupervised/DistanceFile.htm). Then just connect it to MDS widget.

Thank you, Ales!
That page was helpful.
I now have a map with just dots. How do I get the labels to appear beside each dot? I began the file with 30 labelled, followed by 30 lines, 31 columns including the label on the left.

Use the 'Label' combo box in the 'Graph' tab of the MDS widget. If the Distance File successfully loaded the labels from the file there should be an 'Label' entry alongside 'No name' in the pull down menu.

I see that box now - thank you!
